Drive to Umbwe Gate (1,800m) for registration, then begin the steepest climb on Kilimanjaro through lush rainforest and along a dramatic exposed ridge. The trail is direct and challenging — reach Umbwe Cave Camp for your first night deep in the forest.
Continue the relentless ascent along the narrow Umbwe Ridge with breathtaking exposure and panoramic views. Leave the forest behind and arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the towering Barranco Wall — one of the most spectacular days on any route.
Climb the exhilarating Barranco Wall early in the morning, then traverse the scenic ridge into the Karanga Valley. This extra acclimatization day is the key to higher success on the steep Umbwe Route — giving your body time to adjust before the final summit push.
Trek through the barren alpine desert with its surreal giant lobelias and senecios. Reach Barafu Camp in the early afternoon for an early dinner and full rest before your midnight summit attempt.
Midnight climb from Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for a magical sunrise on the Roof of Africa! After celebrating and taking summit photos, descend rapidly through the alpine desert and rainforest to Mweka Gate. Private transfer back to Moshi or the airport. End your unforgettable 6-Day Umbwe Route Kilimanjaro adventure!
